An Important Decision
Based on the people I've met, I've decided that people are basically good. Not one of them has tried to kill me, in earnest. Does absence of attempted murder equal goodness? No, but any attempt on my life would likely lead me to a different opinion of humanity. Why all this talk of murder? Maybe I'm fixated on violence and death because I've been watching the news again.

Ahh! Someone with my philosophy! I do think people are basically good. Why?
1. I have never been murdered.
2. No one close to me has ever been murdered.
3. I have never been assaulted in any way.
4. No one close to me has been assaulted in any way.
That's a simplification, of course, and not meant to diminish the statistics on murder and assault (which are usually committed by people who knew the victims) but I honestly think most people want to do the right thing and, if given the chance, will do it. Now, crimes of passion and convenience are always going to happen-- which is why we shouldn't piss off Uncle Bob who has 16 guns or flaunt a pile of cash on a crowded train.
Don't be stupid and most people will be good.
Amen.
Sorry to be a downer, but having had #4 in my life I can't say I buy it. Most people, I think, are basically lazy, and a lot of the time that means not bothering to stop someone else who is hurting someone. So no, not everyone is assaulting people probably, but pretty much anyone will turn a blind eye.
And Kristina, sorry, 1 in 4 women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. I'll bet you know 3 other women.
Yeah, I'm cynical today, aren't I?
I also believe that people in general are good. Might be naive, no idea. But I have never had any encounter with violence in my life.
